We first Sorted our first-years into the four houses. The Sorting Hat, as ever, did an admirable job—though did seem to have an inclination to put people into Ravenclaw. However, the crowded conditions inside the marquee did mean that, instead of the new students coming to the front to be Sorted, the Hat had to be passed around the room to those who required its services. (The Hat was contacted for its feelings on suffering such an indignity, but declined to comment.)
Following the Sorting, it was time for the Great Harry Potter Quiz of 2015. This commenced with an artistic challenge: teams had the length of the quiz to make something Harry-Potter-related with the provided 13 pipe cleaners. The judges were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the entries; indeed, when it came to judging at the end, they found it difficult to choose a winner. In the end, they settled on the excellent Goblet of Fire, complete with Harry's name emerging from the flames, made by the team "Nearly Head-(of the River)-less Nick". It was similarly difficult for them to judge the team name competition, with joint first place being awarded to three teams: "Bitches with Snitches", "#SWAGRID" and (the heartbreaking) "Team Dead Sirius".
Which meant it was down to the quiz itself to decide the winner. Following rounds on Harry Potter in translation, wordplay, and characters' last words, it was "Team Dead Sirius" that took away the chocolate-based prize, scoring an impressive 61/70.
If you missed the quiz, would like to relive the night or want to share the quiz with others, you can see the questions below. (The viewing pane doesn't work in mobile view, so there's also a link to download the quiz as a PDF. Both desktop and mobile users can download a PDF with the answers from the link underneath as well.) In particular, Alex, the quiz's author, would like to thank Sophie and another attendee—he's sorry he didn't catch your name—for pointing out alternate connections in the "Kingsley's Patronus" round.
Keep up the Quest!
