Oxford University has come out with statements in the past week highlighting their existing anti-racist statements and progress, but we here at HPSoc wanted to make our own stance clear. Just as Hogwarts accepts any individuals with the ability to perform magic, HPSoc accepts anyone who loves the Harry Potter Universe, and aims to be open to change and feedback from members and potential members alike. However, that is by no means to say that we should sit by content. There is always room to learn and grow, and when there are injustices beyond our remit remaining silent is essentially to remain complicit. Therefore, in our own small way, we at HPSoc would like to join our voices to the millions of others in saying that Black Lives Matter.
I hope that those of us trying to be allies can all use this time to reflect and act in whatever way we can: whether that is just reflecting upon our own privilege and prejudices and educating ourselves; whether that is listening to and acknowledging the experiences of black individuals (and furthermore those of people different from ourselves); whether we can donate to a cause; whether we can campaign and sign petitions; or whether we can protest in the streets in the footsteps of so many before us.
